Ask Absolute · Cooling

Why won’t my air conditioner turn on?

Direct answer

An AC that will not start may have a thermostat, power, condensate-safety, control, motor or compressor problem.

What this usually means

Confirm the thermostat has power and is set to COOL. Check the labeled HVAC breaker once, but do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips.

Many systems include a switch that stops cooling when condensate cannot drain safely. Finding water near the indoor unit is useful information for the technician.

What you can safely check

  • Thermostat display and mode
  • HVAC breaker position
  • Indoor service switch
  • Visible water near the indoor unit
When to call a professional

Request service when power and thermostat settings appear normal, or immediately for sparking, burning odor or a breaker that trips again.
