Square footage is only one input in HVAC sizing. Insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, occupancy, duct location and design conditions change how much heating and cooling a home actually needs.

A load calculation describes the building

A room-by-room or whole-home load calculation estimates heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter using building characteristics and local design conditions.

It creates a technical basis for equipment capacity. It does not replace duct evaluation, equipment selection or commissioning.

Bigger equipment is not automatically safer

Oversized cooling equipment can satisfy the thermostat quickly, shorten cycles and reduce moisture-removal time. Frequent cycling can also affect comfort and component wear.

Undersized equipment may struggle at design conditions, but long runtime by itself does not prove undersizing. Modern variable-capacity systems are often designed to run for extended periods.

Capacity must match airflow and ducts

The selected equipment needs a duct system and return path capable of moving the required air. Replacing equipment without assessing static pressure, register delivery and duct condition can preserve the old comfort problems.

Additions, enclosure projects, window replacements and insulation improvements may have changed the building since the previous system was installed.

Ask how the load was determined, how the equipment was selected, whether ducts and electrical service were evaluated and how performance will be verified after installation.

  • Equipment selection data for the proposed model.
