Heat pumps operate differently from furnaces, especially as outdoor temperatures fall. Longer cycles, cooler-feeling supply air and occasional defrost operation can be normal. A useful diagnosis separates those normal behaviors from an airflow, control, refrigerant or equipment problem.

Heat-pump air may feel warm—not hot

A heat pump usually delivers air at a lower temperature than a gas furnace. The air can feel only mildly warm at the register even while it is adding heat to the home.

Judge performance by whether the indoor temperature is rising toward the setpoint, not by comparing supply air with the intense heat of a furnace.

Longer cycles can be normal when temperatures drop

Heating demand increases as outdoor temperature falls, while an air-source heat pump has less available heat to move. Longer run times do not automatically mean the system is failing.

Continuous operation deserves attention when the home loses temperature, energy use changes sharply, airflow is weak or the outdoor unit repeatedly ices without clearing.

Understand auxiliary heat and defrost

Auxiliary heat supplements the heat pump when the load is high or the thermostat calls for a large temperature recovery. It can also operate during defrost, when the system temporarily reverses to remove frost from the outdoor coil.

A brief outdoor steam cloud during defrost can be normal. Heavy ice that remains, repeated emergency-heat operation or a system that never catches up should be evaluated.

Safe checks before requesting service

Confirm HEAT mode, use a steady setpoint, inspect the filter and make sure return and supply grilles are open. Keep leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit without chipping ice or opening panels.

  • Call promptly for burning odors, sparking or repeated breaker trips.
  • Do not force or chip ice from the outdoor coil.
  • Report whether the thermostat shows AUX or EM HEAT.
  • Note whether the indoor temperature rises, holds steady or falls.
